The legal tussle between the Rivers State Government and the Federal Government on collection of Value Added Tax has once more been brought to the fore, with Governor Wike’s recent enjoining of the Supreme Court to speedily give a ruling on the case, according to Barrister NG on its website. Rivers State is seeking a transfer from the Federal Government to it (Rivers), the power to collect and distribute its internally generated VAT, and is pursuing an action against the Federal Government for this.
Barrister NG reported that, Governor Wike, in his Independence Day address to the people of Rivers State, stated that a ruling in the State’s favour would add more financial resources for the acceleration of the State’s economic growth. Wike stated that the current collection and distribution status quo was an act of injustice and that his government is determined to right it.
