On Monday, 5th September 2022 at the inaugural meeting of the Presidential Committee on Excise Duty for the Digital Economy Sector, Minister for Communications and Digital Economy, Isa Ali Pantami, made it known that the Federal Government had suspended its proposed 5% Excise Duty on Telecommunications Services.
Pantami, who had publicly criticized the tax when it was first proposed recently, said that he petitioned the President on how the telecoms sector is currently overburdened and a new tax is unhelpful and unnecessary.
According to the Minister, it is on this basis that the President has suspended the tax. Pantami further added that the President also approved the setting up of a committee to look into the situation and advise him (the President) accordingly.
