Harmonized taxes in Benue State would be taking effect from January 2023. The Executive Chairperson of the Benue State Internal Revenue Service (BIRS), Mrs. Mimi Adzape-Orubibi, made this known recently at a Joint State Revenue Committee meeting, according to the Guardian Newspaper on its website.

Here’s a little backstory…

Some months ago, Governor Ortom signed into law a bill for the Amendment of Benue State Internal Revenue Service Act. The amended act, which seeks to end multiple taxation, amongst other things, saw to the harmonizing of some revenue items. The Guardian reported that the harmonized taxes include Signage and Advertisement, Land Use Charge, Radio and Television Fee, Single Inter-State Road Taxes Stickers Fee, Single Haulage Fee for loading and Single Haulage Fee for discharging of goods, Single Parking Permits Sticker Fee and Wharf Landing charges where applicable.

…End of backstory

So, what was formerly known as Tenement Rate, Property tax and Grounds Rate would now be known as Land Use Charge, which landowners would begin to pay from January 2023. In addition, telephone users and cable subscribers would also begin to pay taxes come January 2023. According to the BIRS Chairperson, telephone users and cable subscribers would have the proposed amount, NGN1,200 per annum and NGN2,400 per annum, respectively, deducted from source and they might not even know. The amount for landowners would be determined by the size of their land and the property on it, as reported by the Guardian.
